Long Term Investments:
We are happy to work with those individuals who are interested in investing larger amounts to help us work towards a more sustainable farming system in Maine. Here at Nezinscot, we not only sell what we grow, but we are also involved with a hand full of other farms like us who do not have the means to market their products efficiently, but want to keep farming. Most of these farms are either certified organic, or produce using organic practices. They are paid by me what they need in order to keep farming, I give them an opportunity to store some of their products in a freezer and or root cellar to increase shelf life, and or I find a way to make a bit more profit on it by adding value and turning it into a canned product for re-sale at our store.
We work with two non-profits. RCAM (Rural Community Action Ministry), and The Good Shepard Food Bank.
This is where long term investors come in. People can invest in my Senior Citizens fresh food fund; a program set up at our farm over five years ago to help get fresh food to needy seniors while supporting local foods from local farms. Up to now, the funds that have been available are those collected in a jar at our store from incoming customers; a few dollars at a time.
The recipients are notified of the amount, and are able to access that account for prepared meals made with organic and local ingredients, fresh fruits and vegetables, dairy, meats, as well as canned goods. We would like to increase our freezer, canned goods, and rootcellars to accomodate a growth in this program and ask that interested investors consider a $5,000 to $10,000 donation towards this project. In exchange, the money, along with a 5% bonus, will go into the senior citizens fresh food fund. This will now allow more food to be made available to these organizations, allow me to make a more serious commitment to my growers and possibly pay them a percentage up front for seed purchases, and continue to help keep small to medium sized family farms viable in Maine.
